M87 is a supergiant elliptical galaxy in the constellation Virgo that contains several trillion stars. Located around 55 million light years from Earth, it is one of the largest and most massive galaxies in the local universe. It's central supermassive black hole contains billions of times the mass of our Sun, and is emiting a jet of energetic plasma that extends at least 4,900 light-years.
